Kerala Tour Package: The journey to this watery paradise is part of the adventure. Alleppey is located deep in the south of India, and reaching it from the bustling metropolises requires a good plan. The excellent connectivity of Kerala ensures that whether you prefer the speed of a flight or the scenic comfort of a long-distance train, getting here is smooth and straightforward. If you've been wondering how to reach Alleppey from major cities across India, this detailed guide is your perfect itinerary planner.

The Fastest Way: Flying to the Nearest Airport

Alleppey does not have its own airport. The fastest and most convenient way to travel from any major city, especially those far away like Delhi or Kolkata, is by flying to the nearest major international airport.

Cochin International Airport (COK)

  • Distance to Alleppey: Approximately 75 to 85 kilometres (1.5 to 2.5 hours by road).
  • Connectivity: This is the best choice. Cochin (Kochi) is an international hub and is perfectly connected to almost every major city in India. You will find frequent daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, and all other major Indian cities.
  • Onward Journey from Airport:
    • Pre-paid Taxi/Cab: The most hassle-free option. Taxis and private cabs are readily available outside the airport, and the journey is comfortable on the National Highway 66 (NH 66).
    • Bus: For budget travelers, KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) buses are available from the airport towards Alleppey or Ernakulam (from where you can change for Alleppey).
    • Train Combo: You can take a taxi or auto to the nearest railway stations like Aluva or Ernakulam Junction, and then catch a local train to Alleppey (Alappuzha Railway Station).

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV)

  • Distance to Alleppey: Approximately 150 kilometres (3.5 to 4 hours by road).
  • When to Use: This is a good alternative if you find better flight connections or prices to the state capital, or if your Kerala trip plan involves starting from the south (like Kovalam or Kanyakumari).

The Scenic Route: Reaching by Train

For long-distance travel, especially from cities in the North, West, or East, the train is often the most cost-effective and scenic way to travel to Kerala. The Konkan Railway route along the coast is particularly stunning.

Alleppey Railway Station (ALLP)

The great news is that Alleppey (Alappuzha) has its own railway station (code: ALLP) located right in the heart of the town. This station is a major stop on the Southern Railway network, meaning many long-distance express trains halt here.

Key Connections from Major Cities:

North & East India (Delhi, Kolkata, Kanpur, Patna, Lucknow, Gurugram)

The journey from the north is long, taking around 35 to 45 hours, but direct trains are available, which saves you the hassle of changing.

  • From Delhi/Gurugram: Look for trains like the Kerala Express (daily), Mangala Lakshadweep Express (daily), or the TVC Rajdhani Express (faster, but less frequent). These trains run from New Delhi (NDLS) or Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) stations.
  • From Kolkata: The Shalimar-Thiruvananthapuram Express offers a direct connection, although it runs only on specific days of the week.

West & Central India (Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bhopal, Indore, Nagpur)

The journey is mid-distance, usually taking around 24 to 30 hours, often using the beautiful Konkan coastal route.

  • From Mumbai/Pune: Look for trains like the Netravati Express or the Matsyaganda Express. You will find direct or easy connecting trains from Mumbai’s major terminals (LTT, CST) and Pune.
  • From Ahmedabad/Surat: Direct trains like the Veraval-Trivandrum Express or others moving down the western coast connect these cities to Alleppey.
  • From Bhopal/Nagpur/Indore: Connecting trains are generally the way to go, often joining the main North-South line at Chennai or on the Konkan route. Look for trains heading towards Ernakulam or Thiruvananthapuram, which stop at Alleppey.

South India (Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore)

The journey from the southern cities is fast and convenient, often completed in an overnight trip.

  • From Bengaluru: Overnight trains like the Kanyakumari Express or others running to Kochi/Trivandrum offer a quick journey of about 12 to 14 hours.
  • From Chennai: The Alleppey Express or the Chennai-Alappuzha Superfast Express are excellent, direct, and frequent options, taking around 13 to 15 hours.
  • From Hyderabad/Visakhapatnam: You will find direct trains from Hyderabad, which take around 24 hours. From Visakhapatnam, trains like the Korba-Kochuveli Express run directly to Alleppey.
  • From Coimbatore: The journey is very short, only about 5 hours, with frequent train connections.

Train Booking Tip: Train tickets, especially for sleeper and AC classes, should be booked well in advance (1 to 2 months before your trip), particularly if traveling during the tourist season (October to March).

The Road Trip: Driving or Taking a Bus

For travelers coming from neighbouring South Indian states, hitting the road can be a fantastic way to enjoy the changing landscape.

By Bus

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates a wide range of buses, including comfortable Volvo and AC Sleeper services, connecting Alleppey to various cities.

  • From Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore: Daily overnight AC buses are very popular and offer a direct, comfortable way to reach Alleppey. The journey takes between 10 to 14 hours.
  • From Nearby Cities: Frequent bus services connect Alleppey to all major Keralite cities like Kochi, Trivandrum, Thrissur, and Kottayam.

By Self-Drive/Cab

Alleppey is connected by the efficient National Highway 66 (NH 66), which runs along the western coast.

  • From South Indian Cities: Driving from Bengaluru (approx. 590 km), Chennai (approx. 710 km), or Hyderabad (approx. 1160 km) is possible, but a stop-over is recommended for the longer drives. The roads are generally good, but driving across state borders requires careful planning.
