1. Varkala Beach -

Varkala is, in my professional opinion, the most unique and visually stunning beach experience in all of South India. It's the only place in the southern part of Kerala where the land rises into sheer cliffs right next to the Arabian Sea.

• The Vibe: Bohemian, relaxed, and health-focused. The North Cliff is a kilometre-long strip lined with quaint cafes, guesthouses, yoga centres, and boutiques. It’s perfect for backpackers, solo travellers, and wellness seekers.
• Unique Feature: The Varkala Cliff itself, a geological monument. Watching the sunset from one of the cliff-top cafes, seeing the sky explode in colour over the endless ocean, is an absolute must-do.
• Must-Do Activity: Attend a yoga or meditation session in the morning, followed by a fresh seafood dinner at sunset on the cliff.

2. Kovalam Beach - 

Kovalam is the grand dame of Kerala beaches—the one that put the state on the global tourism map back in the 70s. It’s a collective of three crescent-shaped coves, offering a beautiful mix of action and relaxation.

• The Vibe: Energetic and well-developed. It’s perfect for families and couples looking for a full-service beach holiday with plenty of amenities.
• Unique Feature: The iconic red-and-white striped Vizhinjam Lighthouse dominates the southern crescent (Lighthouse Beach). You can climb the lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline.

5. Bekal Beach -

Located in the far northern Kasaragod district, Bekal Beach is famous for the stunning, well-preserved Bekal Fort that stands majestically on a headland overlooking the sea.

8. Poovar Beach - 

Located near the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram, Poovar Beach is not just a beach—it's an estuary, where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea.

• The Vibe: Secluded, exotic, and truly unforgettable. Access is often by boat through the backwaters, making the journey an experience in itself.
• Unique Feature: The sight of the golden sand bank separating the river/backwater on one side from the ocean on the other. You’ll see lush mangroves and unique floating cottages here.

9. Payyambalam Beach - 

Located in Kannur, Payyambalam is one of the most serene and well-maintained stretches of coastline in North Kerala, known for its sheer cleanliness and local cultural importance.

• The Vibe: Tranquil, vast, and picture-perfect. It’s less commercialised than the southern beaches, attracting visitors seeking peace and stunning natural beauty.
• Unique Feature: The beach features a large, well-manicured garden area and the striking statue of a mother and child, a famous local landmark. It also serves as the final resting place for several prominent political and literary figures of Kerala.
• Must-Do Activity: Enjoy a long, undisturbed walk on the expansive sand, and watch the waves crash against the rocky outcrops in the distance.

10. Kappad Beach -

This beach near Kozhikode (Calicut) is historically significant it's the spot where the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama is said to have first set foot in India in 1498, changing the course of history.

• The Vibe: Heritage-rich and peaceful. Though it’s a site of monumental importance, it remains relatively quiet, allowing you to reflect on its history.
• Unique Feature: A small stone monument commemorates Vasco da Gama's landing. There is also an ancient temple (believed to be 800 years old) on a rock near the beach.
