Kerala Tour Package: Kerala’s beaches are known for their golden sands, dense palm groves, and a much more laid-back vibe than their counterparts in places like Goa. They offer an authentic taste of coastal life where you can watch traditional fishing, learn some yoga on a cliff, or just relax in a hammock beneath the palms.

Here are my ten recommendations, covering the length and breadth of the state, each with a unique reason to visit:

1. Varkala Beach -

Custom Image

Varkala is, in my professional opinion, the most unique and visually stunning beach experience in all of South India. It's the only place in the southern part of Kerala where the land rises into sheer cliffs right next to the Arabian Sea.

  • The Vibe: Bohemian, relaxed, and health-focused. The North Cliff is a kilometre-long strip lined with quaint cafes, guesthouses, yoga centres, and boutiques. It’s perfect for backpackers, solo travellers, and wellness seekers.
  • Unique Feature: The Varkala Cliff itself, a geological monument. Watching the sunset from one of the cliff-top cafes, seeing the sky explode in colour over the endless ocean, is an absolute must-do.
  • Must-Do Activity: Attend a yoga or meditation session in the morning, followed by a fresh seafood dinner at sunset on the cliff.

2. Kovalam Beach -

Custom Image

Kovalam is the grand dame of Kerala beaches—the one that put the state on the global tourism map back in the 70s. It’s a collective of three crescent-shaped coves, offering a beautiful mix of action and relaxation.

  • The Vibe: Energetic and well-developed. It’s perfect for families and couples looking for a full-service beach holiday with plenty of amenities.
  • Unique Feature: The iconic red-and-white striped Vizhinjam Lighthouse dominates the southern crescent (Lighthouse Beach). You can climb the lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline.
  • Must-Do Activity: Try your hand at water sports like surfing or parasailing, or indulge in an authentic, multi-day Ayurvedic treatment at one of the many resorts nearby.

3. Marari Beach (Mararikulam) -

Custom Image

If the idea of a vacation is to unplug completely, Marari is your answer. Located near Alleppey (Alappuzha), this beach is famed for its authentic fishing village backdrop and incredible tranquility.

  • The Vibe: Peaceful, pristine, and slow-paced. It’s the antithesis of the crowded tourist spots. This is where you go to reconnect with nature and enjoy a real coastal lullaby.
  • Unique Feature: Marari is less about tourism and more about local life. The village of Mararikulam itself offers a glimpse into traditional Keralan coastal living. You won't find jet skis here, just fishermen and the gentle sway of palms.
  • Must-Do Activity: Stay in an eco-friendly beach cottage and spend your days reading, walking, and enjoying the freshest catch of the day from a local homestay.

4. Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach -

Custom Image

This beach in North Kerala (Kannur District) holds a truly unique distinction: it is the longest drive-in beach in India, stretching for about four kilometres of firm, compacted sand.

  • The Vibe: Adventurous and fun! This is the perfect beach for travellers who love a bit of adrenaline mixed with their sea breeze.
  • Unique Feature: The ability to drive your car, bike, or scooter right along the shore. It's safe, exhilarating, and offers a fantastic backdrop for a long, unforgettable joyride.
  • Must-Do Activity: Take your vehicle for a spin during low tide, or try out beach stunts and activities like paragliding, beach cycling, or motorboat rides offered by local operators.

5. Bekal Beach -

Custom Image

Located in the far northern Kasaragod district, Bekal Beach is famous for the stunning, well-preserved Bekal Fort that stands majestically on a headland overlooking the sea.

  • The Vibe: Historic, scenic, and grand. It offers a quieter, more cultural experience than the beaches down south.
  • Unique Feature: The contrast between the giant keyhole-shaped fort walls and the pristine beach below is spectacular. It's a photographer's dream, especially at sunset when the ramparts are bathed in golden light.
  • Must-Do Activity: Climb the fort walls for panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the twin palm-fringed beaches on either side, then spend the late afternoon enjoying the beautifully maintained coastal park.

6. Cherai Beach -

Custom Image

Situated on Vypin Island near Kochi, Cherai offers a rare and beautiful confluence where the backwaters are separated from the Arabian Sea by only a narrow strip of golden sand.

  • The Vibe: Charming, family-friendly, and relaxed. It’s easily accessible from Kochi and provides a gentle transition from the city buzz to coastal serenity.
  • Unique Feature: The unique phenomenon of seeing the ocean on one side and the tranquil backwaters on the other. It's common to spot Chinese fishing nets and even occasionally catch a glimpse of dolphins!
  • Must-Do Activity: Enjoy a long, leisurely swim in the relatively shallow waters, then take a short backwater cruise to see the traditional village life.

7. Alappuzha (Alleppey) Beach -

Custom Image

While Alleppey is most famous for its houseboats, its beach holds a special place due to its historical significance and old-world charm.

  • The Vibe: Nostalgic and bustling with local flavour. It's a key community gathering spot, filled with local families, hawkers, and vendors, particularly in the evenings.
  • Unique Feature: The remains of a 150-year-old sea pier that stretches into the water, serving as a beautiful, ghostly testament to the city's past as a major port. There's also a historic lighthouse nearby.
  • Must-Do Activity: Visit the lighthouse for a great view, and enjoy the sunset amidst the historical structures. This beach is best for atmosphere and cultural insight rather than swimming.

8. Poovar Beach -

Custom Image

Located near the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram, Poovar Beach is not just a beach—it's an estuary, where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea.

  • The Vibe: Secluded, exotic, and truly unforgettable. Access is often by boat through the backwaters, making the journey an experience in itself.
  • Unique Feature: The sight of the golden sand bank separating the river/backwater on one side from the ocean on the other. You’ll see lush mangroves and unique floating cottages here.
  • Must-Do Activity: Take a mesmerising boat ride through the estuary to reach the beach. This journey, passing through dense groves, is arguably more famous than the beach itself.

9. Payyambalam Beach -

Custom Image

Located in Kannur, Payyambalam is one of the most serene and well-maintained stretches of coastline in North Kerala, known for its sheer cleanliness and local cultural importance.

  • The Vibe: Tranquil, vast, and picture-perfect. It’s less commercialised than the southern beaches, attracting visitors seeking peace and stunning natural beauty.
  • Unique Feature: The beach features a large, well-manicured garden area and the striking statue of a mother and child, a famous local landmark. It also serves as the final resting place for several prominent political and literary figures of Kerala.
  • Must-Do Activity: Enjoy a long, undisturbed walk on the expansive sand, and watch the waves crash against the rocky outcrops in the distance.

10. Kappad Beach -

Custom Image

This beach near Kozhikode (Calicut) is historically significant it's the spot where the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama is said to have first set foot in India in 1498, changing the course of history.

  • The Vibe: Heritage-rich and peaceful. Though it’s a site of monumental importance, it remains relatively quiet, allowing you to reflect on its history.
  • Unique Feature: A small stone monument commemorates Vasco da Gama's landing. There is also an ancient temple (believed to be 800 years old) on a rock near the beach.
  • Must-Do Activity: Visit the monument and the rocky outcrop at the northern end of the beach. It’s a great spot for peaceful contemplation and appreciating the history of the Malabar Coast.
